What is Coercive and Controlling Behaviour?

The definition of Coercive and Controlling behaviour is, "Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. This can encompass, but is not limited to, the following types of abuse: psychological, physical, sexual, financial and emotional." This definition comes with the following explanatory text

This definition is reinforced by the following clarifying explanation:

"This definition, is not a legal definition, includes so called 'honour' based violence, female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage, and is clear that victims are not confined to one gender or ethnic group."

Coercive behaviour is an action of acts of physical attacks, threats, degradation and intimidation or any other abuse that is used to harm, chastise, or frighten their victim.

Controlling behaviour is a range of actions intended to make an individual feel inferior and totally dependent on the perpetrator. This is done gradually by isolating the victim of their support network, making them unable to be independent.
